VELVET CLAWS
A collective performance that transfers club-concert logic into the gallery to stage Slovak cultural paradoxes.
Performance / experimental music / found soundtracks / video / live visuals
2016

The project called “Zamatové pazúry” is the name of the three academy students of the Academy of Arts in Banská Bystrica, which focuses on the transversal between the visual and the visual arts. Our idea is to bridging between seemingly different environments, such as the academic and institutional level of contemporary art, and the consumer culture of everyday social life. The masks are very similar to the character and nature of a regular music band operating in the music industry, and the idea of compaction of works of art stood at its birth. Our primary idea is, therefore, the production of experimental music composed of the found soundtracks. The principle of the project is to transfer elements of a classical club or concert scene to the gallery environment and vice versa. In this case, the initial secondary component of the concert becomes the media and the soundtrack is accompanying it. The concept of a concert as such is further transformed into artistic performance by actors. Managing visuals with sound is intended to fill specific ideas with empty spaces while creating space unlimited for mental participation and diverse associations. The visual part is a combination of author’s video recordings capturing the gyucic elements of culture, paradoxes of Slovak society and morals, the character of a common mass consumer moving in the middle stream, and the deformation of the image of independent, previously created works by members of the group, relieved from the original concept.
Key to our work are the moments of paradox, joke and irons that are created by combining the visual and musical parts in the final form directly during the concert / performance. This factor is important in terms of the general importance of the topics we are dealing with and with whom we work. Critical form, which can only appear here with super vision, observes the fact without the intention of moralizing / it is a perception, reflection, reality.
