OWN DEFINITION OF SPACE

A performative and spatial investigation into the concept of “home” and personal identity. The project began in 2015 with an initial performative statement (“I don’t like people who want to change me”) and continued in 2016 with the relocation of the artist’s childhood room into the current studio space.

The work explores a state of displacement during a transitional period of living between multiple locations (Prague, Brezno, and Banská Bystrica), resulting in a condition of constant movement and temporary anchoring in transit spaces such as trains and travel environments. The studio becomes a reconstructed “home,” shared with other students, forming a collective learning and living structure.

The installation functions simultaneously as a physical reconstruction, a performative gesture, and an archive of memory. It reflects on spatial identity through three overlapping modes: authentic experience, documentation, and performance. The presence and absence of the author becomes part of the work itself, where documentation (photography, video, and reconstructed furniture of the childhood room) becomes a performative layer.

In a broader sense, the work can be read as an archetypal transition from childhood to adulthood, grounded in lived experience and continuous self-reflection. It questions where “home” exists – whether as geographical space, psychological condition, or conceptual construct – and how it can be reconstructed, inhabited, and performed.
